Verbena Rigida

Verbena rigida

When I think of Verbena, Verbena bonariensis comes to mind. Tall and slender with flower heads absolutely crammed with hundreds of tiny purple flowers that continue well into October and just seem never-ending.

Verbena Rigida is the smaller, low-growing little brother to bonariensis. More densely flowering it is just as much a delight and loved by butterflies and bees.

Strong branching stems with dark green leaves and flower heads full of tiny flowers forming a vivid purple haze from May to September and maybe even a bit longer in the right conditions, until the first frosts arrive.

Verbena Rigida looks wonderful planted in drifts, along pathways and amongst silver foliage plants or with grasses such as Stipa tenuissima. As happy in a container as it is at the front of the border or in a rockery.

At a time when pollinators are in decline, it is ever more important to grow plants that attract beneficial insects, bees and butterflies and this is one plant that they love.

Verbena Rigida would look great with …

Stipa tenuissima
Geum 'Totally Tangerine' (P)
Artemisia 'Powis Castle'
Argyranthemum 'Polly' (P)

Pantone Colour Of The Year 2017

Pantone Colour Of The Year 2017

Pantone inc. is a company best known for their standardising of colours for manufacturers. Each year they announce the ‘Colour of the Year’ which the likes of fashion designers, florists and other manufacturers refer to and use as a guide for the coming year’s products and trends.

Pantone 15-0343 'Greenery'

This year they have chosen:
‘Greenery (15-0343)’

A colour that we see as we emerge from the dark winter months around spring and Easter time and is usually associated with new beginnings, growth and nature; a very positive colour. Greens are regarded as being vibrant, bright, fresh, optimistic and are certainly
eye-catching.

In the garden, green is one of the cooler colours. It promotes a soothing, calm element and is the most relaxing colour for the human eye to see. It also represents life, renewal and energy.

Green plants usually make a small space appear much larger and they complement many other colours, including red which stands out beautifully against a green backdrop.

Heuchera 'Lime Marmalade' (P)
Ipomoea Sweet Heart 'Light Green' (P)
Echinacea purpurea 'Milkshake' (P)
Eryngium 'Neptune's Gold' (P)
