Peat Free Production

Peat Free Production

Although the deadline for professional horticulture is yet to be finalised (most likely beyond 2030), we anticipate the transition to peat free to be driven more by the consumer, and we are aiming to be completely peat free as early as 2025.

2023/24 Growing Season

In summary, for the 2023/24 growing season, our production in peat free media will be as follows:
  • 100% of all liner products (7cm, 9cm & 12cm).
  • 60% of all plug plant products (with many Genus grown completely PF).
The remaining plug items will be produced in peat reduced media (containing 60% sustainably sourced peat).

Transitioning to Peat Free

Quality is at the forefront of our business objectives, and our mission is to grow great plants with a service you can trust in the most sustainable way possible.

Although the deadline for professional horticulture is yet to be finalised (most likely beyond 2030), we anticipate the transition to peat free to be driven more by the consumer, and we are aiming to be completely peat free as early as 2025.

We have been working hard to trial and help formulate appropriate peat free alternatives in propagation media for many years. Having already reduced peat in our media by 40% over the years, through commercial trials, we have taken steps to move progressively more of our total plug production to peat free during the last few seasons, having already successfully moved to grow 100% of our liner products (7cm, 9cm & 12cm) in peat free medium in the 2020/21 season.

With plant propagation identified as one of the more testing areas for peat free growing medium, we continue to review carefully the challenges caused by rooting and growing in peat free and seek to identify the solutions where possible to mitigate these and facilitate a switch to peat free for even the most problematic varieties.

Due to the relatively short window of opportunity, seasonality, inconsistencies of media in some batches and issues over our wide variety of species, we set 2025 as a target to be completely peat free. As we approach this deadline, we realise that this might be an ambitious target and there may ultimately be certain varieties that do not accept the transition to peat free and we will have to consider their future at the time.

If there are specific items that any customer would like to see grown in peat free media, we encourage indications as early as possible (typically during early summer for the season ahead), so that we have a chance to review and help ensure that these selected items can be produced in peat free medium. The more notice we are given (by means of orders placed), the more likely we will be able to offer the varieties requested as part of our peat free range.
